It’s a strange Monday morning. The screen’s glow seems a bit harsher, the keyboard’s clatter more jarring, and the thoughts? They’re playing a game of hide and seek, refusing to align in that familiar, rhythmic pattern I’m so used to. The tasks from last week? They seem to be buried in a thick fog, with only shadowy outlines visible, reminiscent of memories from a distant past. It’s as though I’ve woken up in a parallel universe where everything is... just a tad bit off.

I’m a marketer. We thrive on precision, on being in sync with the rhythm of people’s who, what, when, where, and whys. We’re used to being the masters of the digital domain, always a step ahead, always on the ball. But today? Today feels like I’m wading through a pool of molasses.

I decided to call my boss to discuss the day’s tasks. I thought perhaps, in talking it through, I’d find that lost rhythm, that familiar cadence. But instead, my usually coherent sentences came out in jumbles, each word trip tripping over the next. I could visualize my boss, making his way through the busy airport, phone pressed to his ear, furrowing his brows, trying to make sense of my “gibberish.”

After we disconnected, literally and figuratively, I decided to unplug and plug myself back in again.

As if by some magical twist of fate, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the room. And in the backdrop, Amy Winehouse’s soulful voice echoed the sentiment I felt deep down, singing about going “back to black.” It was the serendipitous symphony of caffeine and music that beckoned me back to reality.

Here’s the thing: We all have off days. Even those of us who swim in the fast paced, ever evolving ocean of corporate marketing. The world won’t always be in high definition clarity. Sometimes, it’ll be grainy, the colors a bit washed out. But that’s okay. It’s these days that remind us we’re human. That we’re not just digital entities, but souls that sometimes need a moment, a song, a cup of coffee to refocus.

So, if you’re reading this, know that it’s alright to have an off day. Whether you’re a digital marketer, a writer, a teacher, or anyone else for that matter. These days don’t define our worth or our abilities. They merely offer a gentle reminder that sometimes, we need to step back, take a deep breath, maybe listen to a song or two, and just get out of our own heads.

Here’s to those off days, and the brighter, clearer days that inevitably follow.

Cheers! 🍵🎵
